Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements

You are what you eat. Do you eat everything that you need for each part of your body every day? The short answer is no. The long answer is no.

Most of my patients are taking some form of vitamin supplements. My entrance into supplemental and complimentary medicine is actually simple and logical.

Our bodies are really assembly plants much like an automobile plant. Every day, we need parts to repair dying cells or to maintain living cells in our body. Whether the cells are from the skin, liver, heart, brain or bone, we need a very intricate supply line.

Our diet should supply us with healthy amounts of protein, fats carbohydrates and most of the common elements such as potassium, sodium, iron, and even vitamins.

However, even the most health conscious consumer will be missing some daily essentials. Supplements are designed to provide us with what could be lacking.

For women a general vitamin supplement with iron is a good start. For men, a vitamin without iron is usually good enough. More specialized supplements may be necessary for those with particular conditions-for example- arthritis may be helped with shark’s cartilage, glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin. Children may only require a simple basic vitamin.

The choices of vitamins and the doses required will be debated for some time to come.

I recommend you discuss your particular needs with your health care professionals -dietician, pharmacist and physician.

Remember supplemental vitamins are medications too and should be respected.
